Making For You pay more attention to your older likes

May 08, 2026

Common feedback about 💖For You is that it is too reactive to your most recent likes:

the for you feed on here is based on likes and is gradually becoming all star fox themed for me

Ok so I was wondering where the hockey fans were on Bluesky, so I searched one hashtag, liked a few posts, reposted one... ... and now my "For You" feed is ONLY Habs fans talking about the game 🤣🤣🤣 And I am totally ok with this! 😁 (Discover feed most unaffected.)

To make it pay attention to your past likes I tested out a change where I give 10x less weight to your most recent likes compared to your older likes:

I have not launched this fully yet and instead started another experiment which gives less weight to your most recent likes: - give 0.1 to your most recent like - 1.0 to your oldest like within 90 days window (max 500 likes) - all other likes are linearly scaled

A settings control labeled "Seed recency min weight" with a value of 0.1. The description reads: "Reduces the influence of recent likes. The most recent like gets this weight; the oldest like gets 1.0; in between is linear. 0 = disabled, 0.1 = mild dampening (e.g. most recent like counts 10x less than the oldest)." Below the text is a line chart showing weight on the y-axis (ranging from 0.10 to 1.0) and time on the x-axis (from "recent" on the left to "older" on the right), with a straight diagonal line rising from 0.10 at the recent end to 1.0 at the older end.

I ran this change in an A/B test in For You for 27 days and it showed some positive results:

  • 0.3% more users found something to like on a given day

  • 0.2% more feed loads per user - more interesting content to scroll through?

  • 1.1% more likes

  • 2.2% fewer "show less like this" interactions

  • though also 1.8% fewer "show more like this" - unexpected, but at the same time it is a very rare interaction and could be noisy; compare +108K likes vs -580 "show more like this".

Here are the full results:

I enabled this logic for all users of For You this morning and I hope it will make your content more diverse and interesting!
